3 AVAL / PUHA PAKODA

Aval / Poha/ puha/ Avalakki/ Rick flakes / flattened rice / beaten rice - pakoda

Wondering what snack you can do with aval, then do try out this super crispy and delcious snack that can be prepared like any othe deep fried snacks in no time. Stays so crispy for a long time and also this is without besan/ kadalai maavu. My friends have praised me lot for this pakoda when I asked them to try and could not believe that it is aval and that too without besan.

Aval/puha - 1 cup
All purpose flour/maida - 3 or 4 tbsp
Onion - medium - chopped fine
Green chillies - 3 chopped fine
Ginger - 1 inch piece grated or cut fine
Curry leaves - few broken into half
Cilantro leaves - few chopped
Salt as needed
Oil for deep frying

This is my third try making aval pakoda using some leftover aval upma...that's why you can see traces of mustard seeds and channa dhal in the picture( if you want to make just pakodas...no need to add this).

To make pakoda's
Wash and soak aval just enough for immersing them atleast for 15 - 20 mts ..later drain out water if there is any(mostly won't be any)....take them in a mixing bowl...also add chopped onion, green chillies, ginger, curry leaves, cilantro, salt and maida. can also add 2 tbsp of rice flour to give a good crispness. mix well and lightly mash the puha's with your fingers( just lightly enough to crush some)...next add few drops of water and mix to a thick consistency/dropping consistency...heat oil in a pan and drop into small pieces and deep fry in oil...this pakoda's are little crispier and tastes good.

dear Padma,

i tried it..
it was kinda too crispy n hard...
and also it got separated wen i put into the oil..

Don't know why it happened, may be can try adding more of flour to make it to bind which will help it not to seperate in oil.

Thanks
Padma
